Resumo

The data currently available on the solar constant and the spectral distribution of the solar radiant flux have been surveyed. The relevant theoretical considerations on radiation, solar physics, and scales of radiometry have been briefly discussed. A detailed review has been attempted of the methods of data analysis and the many revisions of the results. The survey shows that the results from different sources have wide discrepancies, that no new experimental data have been taken in recent years, and that the conventional technique of extrapolation to zero air mass leaves large uncertainties. The feasibility of further measurements and of a new method of approach has been discussed in the light of the results of this survey.
