ResumoAbstractWithdrawn and disoriented elderly people need stroking as much as anyone else. This study in a skilled care nursing home indicates that physical touch, using the person's name, stimulation through music, and acknowledging the feelings expressed through confused statements and body language can reach these people. Over a five month period subjects became more alert, relaxed and responsive. Measures showed that positive behavior increased and negative behavior declined.
