ResumoThe problem of reading in a foreign literary tradition is one that is largely ignored in the current understanding of multicultural literature. In the enthusiasm to affirm diversity, multicultural literature broadens its scope, making all world literature its area of study. What is often overlooked is that the multicultural work in question represents the culmination of a longstanding literary tradition that stands on its own apart from multicultural literature. All multicultural literature must be taught in the context of its literary tradition in order to provide quality academic instruction, as I demonstrate here through the example of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One-Hundred Years of Solitude.
