Inquisition and New Christians in Pernambuco in the sixteenth century: commercial networks, intrigue and solidarity - Abstract: This article seeks to uncover the relationships established between the new Christians in the Captaincy of Pernambuco, in the late sixteenth century, considering the reactions and solidarity networks set against the presence of the Inquisition in the captaincy (from 1593 to 1595). We propose to discuss how the relationships between these subjects emerge in the documentation generated by the first visitation of the Holy Office to Brazil, our main source of research. We discussed family relations, friendship and business. We also discussed the functioning of the Visitation, where the complaint was the main instrument for the lifting of possible cases of inquisitorial jurisdiction. Reflections developed in our master's thesis and doctoral dissertation that led us to conclude that there is no solidarity among the only New Christians, featuring a cohesive group, but also from the new networks established in the Province, involving the old Christians, a tangle of connections that transcend Jewish descent, although this has had great weight in establishing these men and women in the Captaincy.
