ResumoRNA synthesis and posttranscriptional modification of RNA in dormant and afterripened Agrostemma githago seeds have been studied. Dormant and afterripened seeds synthesize RNA with the same intensity, whereas the RNA synthesis of dormant seeds starts earlier than in afterripened ones. RNA of dormant and afterripened seeds is methylated nearly to the same extent. 2 to 4% of RNA labeled with 14C-adenosine and 3H-uracil are bound to poly (U)-filter discs. During the elimination of nonhybridizing RNA from the filter discs the proportion of 14C-adenine to 3H-uracil increases. This may be indicative for the assumption that the hybridizing RNA is mRNA which contains poly (A) sequences. RNA from dormant as well as from afterripened Agrostemma seeds is able to hybridize with poly (U). It is suggested that dormant seeds of Agrostemma githago are capable to RNA synthesis, RNA methylation, and poly (A) synthesis at the 3' end of mRNA
