Resumo

The concept of narcissism is often used and misused in contemporary social and cultural theory. The aim of this article is to put forward a social psychological and cultural analysis of narcissism. The discussion of narcissism and narcissistic disorders touches upon some central themes in the debate about the formation of late modern identities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a nuanced view about this complex phenomenon. The main argument in the article is, that it is necessary to distinguish among at least four different analytical levels when studying this phenomenon: a psychological level, a social-psychological level, a cultural level and an existential level. The article also deals with the relationship between narcissism and cosmopolitan identities.
