1. A paper-chromatographic method is described for the quantitative determination of cycli tols besides sugars. By this method leaves (needles) and barks of the following species were tested: Pinus nigra, Picea abies, Acer campestre, Magnolia denudata und Quercus cerris. 2. The concentration of cyclitols in barks and needles shows considerable seasonal fluctuations (except m-inositol in the bark of Acer campestre). A spring-summer period with a low concentration can be clearly distinguished from an autumn-winter period with a higher concentration. In the leaves green in summer, the concentration of cyclitols undergoes a rapid increase during the growth of the leaves. 3. The periodical fluctuations of the cyclitol-concentrations are small during the day. An increase around noontime could be observed in the case of some of the cyclitols examined. 4. In plants kept in the dark, the concentration of carbohydrates is reduced in Pinus needles and Quercus leaves, especially the concentration of sucrose. This is also valid for the concentrations of pinitol and quercitol, whereas the concentration of m-inositol remains unchanged. 5. It has been suggested that the derivates of m-inositol have the function of proper storage materials. This property, however, could not be found for m-inositol itself.
