ResumoThe background produced by isolated neutrons in Cherenkov detectors studying the atmospheric neutrinos is discussed. The neutrons are generated in nuclear showers initiated by muons in the rock surrounding the detectors. It is shown that, taking into account the detection of π0 events from reactions of nA→π0X, which look likev e detection, results in an observedI(v μ)/I(v e) ratio close to the expected one for the energy range 0.2–5 GeV.
