Prof. Rudolf Emil Kalman passed away on July 2, 2016 at the age of 86 years old. I learned this sad news in an email from my friend Tryphon Georgiou. The news made me reflect for a while on Kalman's enormous achievements and also on his influence on me and my research. Without his guidance and supervision, my research career would never have been possible, and I am eternally grateful to him (Figure 1).
