ResumoImmediately after the onset of imbition of air-dry embryos of Agrostemma githago seeds ribosomal RNA, tRNA and poly(A)-containing RNA, possibly mRNA, were synthesized. 14C-adenine is preferably incorporated into tRNA in comparison to 3H-uridine during the early phases of imbibition. The conditions of imbibition are very important for the extent of early 3H-uracil- or 3H-leucine incorporation. Embryos soaked under submerse conditions show a drastically reduced incorporation of 3H-uracil and 3H-leucine in comparison to those ones imbibed under conditions of sufficient supply of oxygen. Under O2 deficiency not only the synthesis of ribosomal RNA is diminished but also the rRNA processing velocity decreases. Apart the rapid start of RNA synthesis in dormant embryos the ribonucleic acid synthesis in dormant and afterripened embryos does not show detectable differences.
