Resumo

Prostate cancer is a disease that can be detected early through diagnostic screening methods. We verify the performance of preventive screening for prostate cancer in Santa Ines in Maranhao. This was a descriptive study with a quantitative approach, which evaluated the preventive examinations in a sample of 136 male respondents, with 40 or more years. 78% of respondents reported knowing the age for completion of the first examination, 97% know or have heard of prostate exams. 44% reported they had not done any of the tests, the men who claimed to have done, 89% did the control examinations in SUS, 62% indicated a pelvic ultrasound and 39% underwent transrectal prostate biopsy. It was concluded that despite the clinical examination, serum, radiological, and histological measures are admittedly institutionalized as a preventive for prostate cancer with high impact action, the male population in the Santa Ines and know little use.
