Resumo

The ILO celebrated its centenary this year. It is the first United Nations (UN) specialized agency to achieve this milestone. The origins of the ILO lie in Part XIII of the Treaty of Versailles, which established the League of Nations: ‘Whereas universal and lasting peace can be established only if it is based upon social justice.’ Thus starts the preamble of the ILO. The organization’s journey in the past century was to ensure social justice in the world of work. After the Second World War, the organization reoriented itself with the adoption of the Philadelphia Declaration in 1944 and became the first specialized agency of the UN. In this process, the ILO became the only League of Nations agency that survived the Second World War.
