With the aid of Aaron W. Hughes' Muslim Identities: An Introduction to Islam, the contributors to this special issue provide examples and case studies that highlight cultural specific problems, both contemporary and academic, as well as classic problems within the study of religions, such as the tensions and differences between emic and etic perspectives, comparative religious studies, and theology and religious studies.
