ResumoIn 1982 Austin Rover decided to manufacture a new four–cylinder petrol engine of 1.6 litres capacity, with the objectives of achieving competitive levels of power, torque, fuel efficiency and refinement. The other primary objectives for the engine concept were its installation capability for the Montego and Maestro, and other future models, a high level of reliability and finally maximum use of existing facilities to minimize lead time and resource requirements. This paper briefly describes the critical aspects of the engine design, its development process and the resulting engine performance levels. Two engine derivatives have been produced, a base engine and a high performance version, both of which are discussed.
