ResumoThe objective of this study was evaluate aspects of the silkworm activity during the 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 seasons, identifying the main problems found by silkworm’s farmers at Umuarama - PR region. From a total of 32 properties located between Cruzeiro do Oeste and Maria Helena, 26 properties were visited in loco and, at each visit, the producers were interviewed, with the aid of a form with objective and subjective issues related to rearing management mulberry pruning. The data were presented on % of descriptive terms. The main aspect observed in the breeding of mulberry is that the majority is formed by Miura variety and that many producers offer certain resistance to the use of more productive varieties in its renewal. The harvest of the mulberry is strictly manual. The branches and leaves are kept with cloth moistened in a warehouse near the shed, also serving as a deposit for tools and equipament that are also used during the creation. Regarding the management of the silkworm system the number of daily treatment made by some silkworm’s producers is below the recommended, suggesting the need of a more effective attention of those responsable for technical assistance aimed at the growth of productive activity. The main difficulties found are related to the lack of investment in technology, labour-intensive, cocoons prices and materials used, lack of funding programs and monopoly.
