Resumo

When Th. H. H uxley's classical work "Evidence as to man's place in nature" appeared a century ago. the foundation for modern research in primatology was laid.Hesitatingly at first hut with increasing rapidity during the last ten years, amazing progress has been made in primatology.New centres of research on prima tes spring up in every part of the world and physiologists, serologists, biochemists, cytologists, geneticists, psychologists and pathologists realise more and more that biologic research work on man is no longer possible without taking into considera tion his nearest relations; from many practical aspects as well, particularly in medicine, they have become indispensiblc. It is all the more surprising that in spite of these enormous developments no regular, international organ of publication in the field of primatology does yet exist and results of research and other news items had to appear scattered in various professional journals and institute reports which are not always generally available or at least difficult to obtain. To meet this urgent need for regular information on the im portant advances made in primatology, the editors and the publisher of the " Handbook of Primatology" which started to appear a few years ago, have decided to bring out an international periodical covering the entire field of primatology.W ith a view of including all trends of research work from every country, a number of outstanding primatologists have been invited to collaborate and their immediate consent has been most en couraging. This new journal appears quarterly under the title Folia Primatologica. Each issue contains a number of original papers in English, French or German.A biblio graphical section, beginning with 1962, will give a full account of the latest relevant literature: for obvious reasons and in view of the abundance of already existing publications, works referring purely to the genus Homo are not quoted.Under the heading " Communications" , news of congresses, research centres and personnel will he reported.Book review's are to be published whenever possible. In an attem pt to establish Folia Primatologica right from the beginning as a first class international journal, the Editorial Board invites scientists and institutes to collaborate by regularly submitting their latest papers on any subject of prima tology.he it for publication, for inclusion in the bibliography or for reviewing.Congress reports, programs of future conferences, information on newly established research centres, their organization, and other communications of interest will also he welcome.
