Phytochemistry and antimicrobial potential of basic metabolites of Piper Umbellatum, Piper Guineense, Ocimum Gratissimium and Newbouldia Laevis extracts

Resumo

The antimicrobial potential of basic metabolites of seeds of Piper umbellatum and Piper guinense and leaves of Ocimum gratissimum and Newbouldia laevis have been reviewed. The results showed that basic metabolites of all the plant extracts showed significant antimicrobial activities against the microorganisms tested; Coliform bacili, Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus, to various extents and generally basic metabolites of Newbouldia laevis and Ocimum gratissimum exhibited the greatest antimicrobial activities against the microorganisms. The comparative susceptibility of the microorganisms to various metabolites showed that basic metabolite of O. gratissimum exhibited the greatest activity against Coliform bacili with an inhibition zone diameter of 25mm at 1.0 mg/ml concentration, whereas the N. laevis metabolite showed greatest activity against Salmonella bacili and Staphylococcus aureus with inhibition zone diameters of 26mm and 24mm respectively at the same concentration. The results were interpreted in terms of differences in the phytochemistry of the various plant metabolites.
