Resumo

The status and distribution of 11 fish species from the Pongolo, Incomati and Limpopo River Systems of the Transvaal were investigated. Although none of the 11 fish species are endangered at present, Kneria auriculata, Barbus treurensis, Chiloglanis bifurcus, C. emarginatus, Aplocheilichthys katangae, Serranochromis meridianus and Astatotilapia brevis are rare. Varicorhinus nelspruitensis, Chiloglanis anoterus, Amphilius natalensis and Aplocheilichthys johnstonii are still relatively common although they have specialized habitat preferences. Factors influencing the status and conservation of Transvaal fishes are discussed.
