ResumoThe objective of this work is to analyze the positions of Joao Simoes Lopes Neto (1865-1916) in the disputes of public memory and representation of the nation in the First Brazilian Republic, through his book “Terra Gaucha”. I attempt to identify how his view of the Rio Grande do Sul’s past was linked to broader national issues and the possibilities of the historical essay for the construction of political identities. In proposing weave a historical narrative to the popular southern state, the writer presents a model of identity for the region, confirming the figure of the gaucho as its representative historical subject. The analysis of the text reveals, however, that there were not still rigid nationalistic restrictions to that model.
