ResumoThe time to define a precise field for philosophy in Argentina coincides with debates around universal suffrage and the forms of democracy.Rodolfo Rivarola was the first professor of philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires, in the new Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and therefore, a pioneer in university philosophy in the country. In his definition of the philosophy is so important the natural science as its projections in the political world.Mindful of the argentine political experience, Rivarola rehearse a double and apparently paradoxical definition, in which epistemological and political concerns were pooled. The article deals with this double definition, there trying to recognize the special contribution of Rivarola and, finally, to notice about some options that are supposed in the consecrated reading of his work.
