ResumoSummaryAluminium samples were anodized in sulphuric acid employing dc and ac in the following range of conditions: 16–25°C, 1–2·5 A/dm2, 22·5-120 A min/dm2. Electrochemical, structural, and optical characteristics of the ac films were compared with those of dc films; corrosion and abrasion resistance were evaluated. AC films in general had inferior abrasion and corrosion resistance and could not be increased in thickness beyond 12–14 μ; however, in the range of thin films produced in warm baths, ac films compared favourably with dc films. Clearer films were formed by the ac technique on castings, alloyed material and after electropolishing.
