Neste artigo, propoe-se um exercicio metodologico de aproximacao entre duas abordagens da Historia da arte, a iconologia e a iconografia, aplicando-as a alguns temas e objetos da arte paleocrista, na busca da elucidacao de seu significado. Primeiramente, sao propostas algumas reflexoes sobre a semelhanca de um dos esquemas compositivos estudados por Erwin Panofsky com o simbolismo geometrico da Trindade citado por Louis Reau. E esbocada uma hipotese a respeito da “genealogia” dessa iconografia, buscando-se ao mesmo tempo detectar a continuidade das formas simbolicas antigas. Em seguida, elabora-se uma discussao sobre continuidade e ruptura em relacao a iconografia de Cristo na Antiguidade Tardia. Buscou-se, em suma, utilizar simultaneamente a iconografia e a iconologia, como formas de leitura mutuamente complementares. ABSTRACT: In this article, a methodological exercise of approximation between two approaches of Art History is proposed, the iconology and the iconography, by applying them to some themes and objects of paleochristian art, searching to elucidate their meaning. Firstly, some reflections are proposed about the similarity of one of the compositional schemes studied by Erwin Panofsky with the geometrical symbolism of the Trinity quoted by Louis Reau. A hypothesis is sketched as to the genealogy of this iconography, searching at the same time to detect the continuity of the old symbolic forms. After that, a discussion is elaborated on continuity and rupture in respect to the iconography of Christ in Late Antiquity. It was our goal, in short, to use simultaneously the iconography and the iconology, as mutually complementary ways of analysis. KEYWORDS: Iconography, Iconology, Paleochristian Art.
