Resumo Pretendo trabalhar com o envolvimento do bispo constantinopolitano Nestorio (428-431) com um grupo de pelagianos que apelou a ele contra as condenacoes que sofriam no Ocidente entao. Meu intuito e discutir as implicacoes da relacao entre debate doutrinario e politica eclesiastica no seculo V a fim de mostrar como essas duas instâncias mantinham uma estreita ligacao entre si. Esse episodio mostra, a meu ver, como a definicao de “heresia” nesse momento podia se adaptar aos interesses eclesiasticos dos personagens envolvidos, sobretudo caso sua condenacao ou absolvicao pudesse ser mobilizada para reforcar a legitimidade da autoridade episcopal dos lideres das principais ses. Palavras-chave: Nestorio, bispo de Constantinopla (428-431); concilio de Efeso (431); con-troversia pelagiana; controversia nestoriana; Cirilo, bispo de Alexandria (412-444) Abstract I aim to work with the involvement of the Constantinopolitan bishop Nestorius (428-431) with a group of Pelagians that appealed to him against the condemnations they suffered in the West. My goal is to discuss the implications of the relationship between doctrinal debate and ecclesiastical politics in the fifth century in order to show how these two instances kept a tight bond between them. This episode shows how the definition of “heresy” then could be adapted to the ecclesiastical interests of the people involved, especially if their condemnation or acquittal could be mobilized to strengthen the legitimacy of the episcopal authority of the leaders of the main sees.
