ResumoIn a bi-national comparison between German and Japanese industrial cultures this paper tries to reveal the potential and actual problems of cooperative product innovation processes. The analyses are led by the idea of innovation competence which is interpreted as a synthesis of the different innovative actors' contributions. As relevant actors engineers, technicians and skilled workers are considered. The Japanese approach to cooperation is tentatively paraphrased as "context-dependent ritualization", and the German type as "skill/competence based disputation". The article concludes with some suggestions for shaping a new cooperative dialogue between designers and workers.
