Contemporary filmgoers will, perhaps, be forgiven for tittering unkindly at Arnheim's rather quaint example of montage and juxtaposition filmic technique, having been raised on a steady diet of computer generated graphic depictions of car crashes and explosions. A scene involving a maid opening a door that one has immediately prior seen from the other side would hardly be expected to create anxiety in the psyches of audience members accustomed to viewing the likes of Freddy Krueger and Pinhead leaping out of dark shadows to slay their unsuspecting teen victims.
