Resumo

This paper analyses pottery recovered from archaeological sites located in Massingir District along the Elephant or Oliphant River (as it is known in South Africa), in the Limpopo Valley, southern Mozambique. Variations in pottery styles from this area have been observed and this has led to interpretations of movements of people as well as changes in settlement patterns. Two newly registered sites, Nhancherwane and Moguro, which have similar parallel-line decorative motifs, are discussed here. These are used to discuss population movements and in particular to enlarge our understanding of early Tsonga settlements in southern Mozambique.
