The search for the Portuguese identity is core of the plot in Jose Saramago‘s Jangada de pedra, and this search also occurs at the level of each individual character. The relevant role played by the media channels 一 press, radio, television 一 in the construction of such identity will be emphasized and the argumentative strategies employed by the author, in order to express with criticism his points of view, will also be presented
