Design Optimization and Sensitivity Analysis of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems: A case of Saint Martin Island in Bangladesh

ResumoThe study performs the design optimization and sensitivity analysis of the hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) for Saint Martin island in Bangladesh. An optimization software named Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER) is used to find out the best technically viable and cost-effective renewable stand-alone model. The Saint Martin island has enormous potential to utilize the solar Photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy. The study considers six scenarios with various energy sources including solar PV, wind energy, and diesel generator. Each scenario is simulated and optimized using HOMER. The results demonstrate that PV-wind-diesel generator (hybrid) delivers the best optimal design for Saint Martin island in terms of cost of energy (COE) followed by PV-Diesel Generator, Wind-PV and Wind alone and PV alone system. The result is compared with other hybrid systems in order to check our data validity. In addition, the impact of solar radiation and wind speed on diesel price is identified by carrying out the sensitivity analysis.
