The following article illuminates the reasons why Alcatrazes on Santiago Island, Cape Verde, West Africa, despite being the Europeans' second tropical urban center at the beginning of the Atlantic Expansion era, (from the late 15th century,) failed after only half a century. The essay highlights, besides apparent administrative reasons, its geographic situation regarding harbour, access to water, fertile hinterland, topography and wind exposure. These factors caused it to lose out to its rival, Ribeira Grande (today: Cidade Velha), and ultimately to Praia, Cape Verde's present-day capital. RESUMO: O artigo a seguir ilumina as razoes do falhanco de Alcatrazes na ilha de Santiago, Cabo Verde, Africa Ocidental, segundo centro urbano tropical levantado pelos europeus no inicio da era de expansao Atlentica (a partir do final do seculo XV), apos sua existencia por apenas meio seculo. Os destaques deste ensaio, alem de razoes administrativas aparentes, focam na sua situacao geografica em relacao ao porto, accesso a agua, hinterland fertil, topografia e exposicao ao vento. Foram estes os factores que a levaram a sucumbir perante a sua rival, Ribeira Grande (hoje: Cidade Velha), e em ultima instencia, a Praia, actual capital de Cabo Verde.
