ResumoThis article presents the first results of an inquiry carried out among the collective organizations of coastline and artisanal fishing on Santa Catarina Island, in the south of Brazil. At the heart of our consideration is the notion of “landscape”. The study starts off with observing the vigias (watchmen) who take a position along the seaside to look out for schools of mullet fish and guide the boats of fishermen who will encircle them and take them in their nets. Using panoramic photography and video sequences, we are able to take in the “distributed cognition” of the lookouts, the other fishing companions, the fish, the winds, the tides, the boats, the nets and the technical instruments. The commitment of the participants provides the condition from which one can perceive this environment. We put forward a way of situating this distributed system of perception central to production of these coastal landscapes.
