ResumoThe purpose of this study was to determine the effect of grade level, gender, and musical style on preference responses of young students in Hong Kong. Musical styles involved were Western art, jazz, rock, Cantopop, and Jiangnan Sizhu. The sample (N=3, 715) ranged from about age 6 and a half to 15 and a half years. Results of mixed-design ANOVA showed that grade level and musical style had significant main effects (p<. 001), but gender had no significant main effect. Subjects tended to dislike the excerpts as grade level increased. The total sample preferred Cantopop music the most, followed by the Western styles (in order: Western art music, rock music, and jazz). Jiangnan Sizhu was the least preferred style. Post hoc tests confirmed that significant changes in preference means for all musical styles generally occurred at about age 10 and above.
