ResumoBy examining James Dashner’s The Maze Runner, this essay explores young adult literature’s productive ability to mitigate trauma. Situating his novel at the intersection of trauma literature and dystopian fiction, Dashner utilizes trauma theory proactively to create a reader sensitive to the complexities of trauma and capable of addressing them in the future. Readers experience an affective journey to foster empathy with trauma victims and ultimately see Dashner’s solutions of community and communication.
