ResumoThe study of proton transfers in hydrogen-bonded systems goes back many years within the discipline of chemistry to early understanding of acids and bases. Renewed interest in this topic was generated by later advances in gas phase and very rapid measurement techniques.1–4 The former permitted detailed investigation of the phenomenon unhindered by complicating effects of the environment while the latter opened up a new window into elementary steps in the overall process. Despite the accumulation of information about the proton transfer process resulting from these studies, other facets of the problem remained out of reach. Moreover, a need for additional insights has been coupled to the intriguing notion of solitons as a means of proton transport over long distances.5–7
