ResumoIn the present study, the natural product named 15,16-epoxy-4-hydroxy-labda-13(16),14-dien-3,12-dione (C20H28O4), a labdane-type diterpene was isolated from the stems of Croton jacobinensis for the first time. This new compound was characterized by infrared and Raman spectroscopy combined with Density Functional Theory calculation. Additionally, the antimicrobial and modulatory antibiotic activities of the compound towards Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were assessed. The labdane diterpene demonstrated a modulatory effect when combined with the antibiotics assayed against both bacteria. A synergistic effect against Escherichia coli can be observed when the compound is associated with gentamicin, reducing the concentration of this antibiotic that is required to inhibit bacterial growth. Other synergistic effects can be observed with gentamicin and cephalothin antibiotics against P. aeruginosa.
