ResumoIn August, 1816, Brazilian troops entered the Banda Oriental forthe second time in five years. The new turn of events dashed all prospectsfor a Spanish-Portuguese effort against the insurgents of BuenosAires. Furthermore, it dealt a severe blow to the Spanish pacificationscheme in America and set in motion a wave of indignation and inflammedpassion among the Spanish nation. And for Continental Europeit created the distinct possibility of another general conflagration.
