Guaranda canton -strain CDV SA3 -canine distemper -incidence -mongrel dogsThe objective of the investigation was to determine the incidence of canine distemper in mongrel dogs infected naturally with the SA3 strain of the canine distemper virus (CDV) in the Guaranda canton, Bolivar province, Ecuador.24 mongrel canines were used, 3 to 8 months of age and 2 to 10 kg live weight, divided in two groups of 12, six male and six females. One group consisted of healthy animals and the other group dogs affected by distemper. The determination of the age of the animals, the breed and the clinical diagnosis of CDV was performed by the PCR test.To each animal in the study was determined the haematochemical profile, platelets, total proteins (PT), glucose, urea, creatinine and uric acid. The descriptive statistics (means) of each variable were compared between healthy and diseased animals. The entirety of the dogs presented Hyperthermia (HT), a common symptom in the distemper group; in the anorexic (AX) it was present in 11 of the affected dogs.Less frequent than the breathing symptoms were the digestive ones.In the sick animals they diminished significantly with regard to the healthy ones, the hemoglobin, hematocrit, total count of erythrocyte, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and corpuscular volume medium. It is concluded that the clinical picture in mongrel dogs infected with the strain SA3 of the CDV drastically compromises the conservation of endangered species due to its very high lethality.
