Resumo: Apos uma introducao, que parte da infância em ambiente rural e tradicional, o autor focaliza em Dom Afonso o dialogo com o mundo moderno, deslanchado com a sua participacao nas quatro sessoes do Concilio Vaticano II. Chama a atencao para a teologia do “esclarecimento”, respondendo a necessidade de traduzir em nova linguagem os dados eternos da Fe, e detem-se na apresentacao das “facetas do pensamento de Dom Afonso”. Apos uma avaliacao de conjunto, chega a conclusao de que Dom Afonso foi entre nos um excepcional “dom de Deus”, continuando ainda a interpelar-nos com o seu lema episcopal: Ide para a Vinha! Abstract: After an introduction starting with years of youth in rural and traditional area, the author focuses on Don Afonso and particularly on his dialogue with the modern world, reporting on his participation in four sessions of the II Vatican Council. The theological “explanation” answers the need to translate the permanent pillars of faith in a new language. Precisely at this point the author gives a great deal of thought about some aspects of the intellectual endeavor of Don Afonso. In the light of a comprehensive evaluation of his personality he arrives at the conclusion that Don Afonso was an outstanding “gift of God” and continues challenging us with his episcopal motto: “Go the my Vineyard”.
