Abstract: The main objective of this article is to analyze the hermeneutic approach which is expressed in the title of its introduction: continuity, rupture, and the spirit of the Council. One should be aware of a sense of caution against the danger of “killing the spirit of the counciliar teaching with its own letter”, as the author starts his study of the document Gaudium et Spes (GS) as an epistemic instrument, laying stress on the constitutive dimension of the last document of the Council, which is defined as a “Constitution”. He shows forth its “epistemic repercussions” and discusses the ambit and theological value of the pastoral activity as regards the doctrinal area. Looking back at GS fifty years after its publication, the author distinguishes between “social doctrine” and the “social dimension” of the Catholic doctrine, he considers GS as a “seed planted in the soil” and presents the concept of the “signs of the time as an epistemic mark of reference”, as a counter position to the “signs of God as a theological stamp”. Similarly, he presents the spirit of Vatican II as an epistemic support of the relationship between God and his People, and reinforces the need to consider the episteme of Jesus of Nazareth, as a Jew of his time. Finally, after considering the intimacy of God in the innermost kernel of the human being, he advocates in the conclusion that it is not possible to reduce GS as a pious monograph of pastoral advice. The challenges raised by this counciliar Constitution still have a long way to go until they are fulfilled.
