Role of the disaster education laboratory in enhancing preparedness of elementary school student

ResumoTo examine ways for a sustainable approach to disaster education, a study conducted at 15 public elementary schools in Banda Aceh. The result found that many schools stopped the disaster education activities, because of the image of costly activities and sense of dependency on external actors. This research aimed at: i) exploring the needs of disaster education laboratory for elementary school; ii) determining the sample of disaster education laboratory model and iii) designing the initial draft/ prototype of laboratory model, iv) validating the conceptual theory through focus group discussion, justification and expert judgement, and v) evaluating and revising the prototype. In general, the Disaster Education Prototype Laboratory consist of: i) multimedia corner, ii) mini library, iii) mini expo and iv) disaster visual aids. Resul the first phase of this study showed that the laboratory model prototype helps in enhancing student preparedness against disaster.
