A Eucaristia é um tesouro do cristianismo por significar a realidade e riquezado próprio Cristo presente na vida da Igreja e do mundo. Por isso, aspira-sepelo dia no qual as Igrejas poderão reunir-se em torno da mesa comum,comendo do mesmo pão e bebendo do mesmo cálice. O cálice já foi símbolode desunião pelo fato de que nem todas as Igrejas permitem a comunhãoeucarística “sob as duas espécies”. No protestantismo, receber do cálice fazparte do rito e da fé eucarística, desde suas origens. Na Igreja católica, isso épossível somente a partir do Concílio Vaticano II. O diálogo entre as Igrejasavança para uma compreensão comum da Eucaristia, trabalhando temascomo a intercomunhão e a hospitalidade eucarística. Muitas questões separamas Igrejas, mas “o que nos une é maior do que o que separa”. Os primeiros1500 anos de história comum entre católicos e protestantes sustentam osesforços para a superação das divisões causadas nos últimos 500 anos.Abstract: The Eucharist is valued as a treasure by Christianity because itsignifies the person and the qualities of Christ himself, which are present in thelife of the Church and the world. On account of this the faithful look longinglyforward to the day when the faith communities are gathered at the table to benourished by the same bread and are drinking from the same cup. The cuphad been the symbol of disunion because not all the churches allow Eucharisticcommunion under the “two species”. In Protestantism, drinking from the cup isboth a ritual and an act of faith in the Eucharist from the beginning. In theCatholic Church, permission to celebrate intercommunion has been grantedonly after the II Vatican Council. But since the initiative of an ongoing dialogueamong the churches a common basis for the understanding of the Eucharisthas been achieved thus furthering the themes of intercommunion andEucharistic hospitality. Although there are many issues that separate thechurches from each other, however what unites them adds up more elementsthan what separates them. The previous 1500 years of history of Catholicismand Protestantism give hope for us to overcome the divisions caused in thelast 500 years.
