EnglishAlthough scholars rarely use the concept of “imperialism” when analyzing pre-modern literary works, the term is particularly fitting for the Poema de Fernan Gonzalez, especially if “imperialism” is understood as “the objectless disposition on the part of a state to unlimited forcible expansion,” as defined by Schumpeter. Taking into account the imperialism of the thirteenth-century Castilian poem illuminates the reasons for its belligerence, triumphalism, and Islamophobia.
