Resumohis work had the objective of analyzing the performance of students who are taking the college entrance exams, while answering the discursive question based on Brazilian Literature, proposed by the entrance exams held in 2008 at the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG). The field research includes two distinct moments: the first is descriptive and the second, exploratory, and it was done at a free preparation course which is held at the university. The corpus of the analysis was composed of fifty exam papers. Taking as a basis the answer key issued by the exam preparation committee, known as COMPROV, we used the following selection criteria: the answers which were the closest to the expected ones but the students’ writing is distant from the one required. At the end of the research, when we compared the answer key issued by COMPROV the answers presented to the discursive question, about Brazilian literature, we concluded that the thorough reading of the literary works, coupled with an interactive study, is of great importance to the students’ successful performance at the question referred to.
