Resumo

In order to better understand how dynamic capabilities rapidly fail, this study provides a longitudinal in-depth study of Sonera Corporation and the failure of their innovation capability in the late 1990s. The findings highlight three reasons for the failure of innovation capability that share a common root in overshooting a capability. Discussion links these reasons to previous literature and highlights that overextending the change potential of dynamic capabilities can lead to performance drop that occurs with a substantial time lag. This foreground the dark side of dynamic capabilities related to the belief that continuous change is both possible and beneficial for organizations.
