From the data on language attitudes and beliefs collected for the Project Linguistic Beliefs and Attitudes: a study of the relationship of Portuguese with languages in contact (AGUILERA; SELLA, 2009), the speakers’ points of view regarding the languages and cultures in contact will be identified. The questions were (i) What is the most beautiful language? and (ii) What is the ugliest language? A discussed analysis of the speech in both locations will be triggered by the answers given. The analysis is based on the conviction that beliefs and attitudes may explain linguistic changes in a society (CANALIS; REY, 2006). The answers and comments will be analyzed within the diasexual, diageneric and diastratic dimensions, aiming at identifying which factors may be described as linguistic phenomena conditioners and in which direction the cognitive, affective and conative components can be taken as categories guiding the conservation and speech innovation linguistic phenomena.
