ResumoCurrent paper analyzes the responses of 138 high school children through Focal Groups to investigate how they appropriated the book Guia Politicamente Incorreto da Historia do Brasil [A politically incorrect guide to the History of Brazil] published by the journalist Leandro Narloch in 2009. The History of Brazil, as taught in the schools, is criticized. The author argues that History teachers are outdated due to their leftist trends. Backward cultures, especially the Indigenes, are among the many items that the school teaches in an ambiguous way. In the author´s view, they are against the principles for the strengthening of the nation, namely, rationality, entrepreneurship, progress and work. Since Narloch proposes to disrupt, negate and criticize History as taught in the schools, emphasizing the presentation of discourse to the detriment of 'objectivity', he convinces and persuades the reader. Results show that knowledge within society, especially that disseminated by the social media, may be pedagogically more powerful than the school; that the model of critical interpretation does not mean a historical and social critique; that the differences between forms of living and thinking, past and present, are seen within an unhistorical perspective.
