ResumoOne of the most remarkable scenes of the Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes, is the murder of Medea’s brother. Jason and Medea carefully plan a deception for Apsyrtus, for they believe that is the only way to escape. In this perspective, the death of Apsyrtus can also be analyzed as a sacrifice, similar to the sacrifice of Iphigenia, because in both cases human death enables the unfolding of the story. This is a brief scene, but rich in details, in which it is possible to observe the competence of the poet and to situate the Argonautica in the epic and mythological context. Key-words: Argonautica, murder of Apsyrtus, death as sacrifice, translation. 1 Mestranda do Programa de Pos-Graduacao em Letras Classicas da Universidade de Sao Paulo (USP).
