ABSTRACT: This work aimed to present some reflections on the characterization of the speech genre concerned with a view to the theory presented by Bakhtin (2004). Subsidize the work beyond the studies developed by Bakhtin (2000 2004), also works Schneuwly and Dolz (2004), Marcuschi (2005, 2008), Bronckart (2003), Bazerman (2006), among others. It starts with the prospect that genres are tools developed socially mediated actions by individuals and active participants in the world of social interaction. From the perspective of Bakhtin (2004), all written and oral forms, used in everyday life, genres and are therefore full of meaning as to the thematic content, style and compositional construction. Considering these three aspects, we developed this study aiming to evaluate the characteristics of the speech genre cause concerned in accordance with the guidance of sociological method for studying the language proposed by Bakhtin (2004). For this, we analyze the cause “The hammock” of Joao Simoes Lopes Neto, taken from a textbook of the final series of elementary school.
