Abstract Adaptation of the gastropod Potamides lamarcki to varying conditions of salinity led to the development of a series of varieties (some of which have previously been described as species). Its distribution in Oligocene formations of France indicates that it migrated southward from a dispersal center in the north and that the enclosing beds were deposited in a series of independent lagoons and gulfs.
