Resumo

Environmental and human quality are directly related in each region, so that economic growth should reduce social exclusion and promote environmental preservation. The research aimed to investigate the ten municipalities of greater economic importance in the state of Maranhao, to determine if economic development is portraying the quality of life of the population and the environmental quality of these municipalities. The research was made through the analysis of socio-economic indicators and sanitation in the municipalities of: Acailândia, Bacabal, Balsas, Caxias, Codo, Imperatriz, Porto Franco, Santa Ines, Sao Luiz and Timon. The Maranhao population presents socioeconomic indices far below the Brazilian average, which reflects both the environmental quality and the health of the population. The exploratory approach was applied to the survey to carry out the survey of the socioeconomic variables, and the data covered by the millennium goals proposed by the United Nations. The variables were submitted to correlation analysis, to detect which variables are best correlated. We detected that population growth is not keeping up proportionately access to basic sanitation in the investigated cities. We conclude that it is the public power to promote actions through public policies, especially in the state's Eastern Meso-region, since improving the environmental quality of such municipalities contributes to a reduction in the incidence of infectious diseases, a decline in infant mortality, and quality of life of the population in social vulnerability.
