ResumoDifusion of phosphine incide nests of Cornitermes cumulans (kollar) (Isoptera: Termitidae)Aspects reiated to the phosphine difusion inside nests of C. cumulans were studied, under natural condítions in Piracicaba-SP, Brazil. The external walis of the nests, which were built with soil partidas cemented with termites saliva, were not totalty iiapermeabie to the sinoke obtained froin burning the nests internal celuilose chambers. This smoke easily fiowed away through the walls to the external environment, without any internal artificial pressure.Periodical assesments ofphosphine concentrations in different places incide the nests, done with a Multi Gas Detector DRAGER, showed a total ioss of the gas from aix to thirty hours after the introduction of one to eight tablets of phosphine in the nests.Total insect mortality nevar was observed, even when eight phosphine tablets were applied per neat.About 20% of aiived insects ever remaining in the lower parts of the celuliose chambers in conditions to rebuilt the nest and to begin the infestation again.Only above the soil une a 100¼ termites mortality was observed, for phosphine ratas greather than four tableta per neat. The cite where the tablets were placed, in the upper or in the lower part of the celuliose chambers, did not aftect the insect mortality at the leveis observed in this trial.
